You know how people say that Singapore has come so far, from a small little island who didn't even have enough to support its own people to one of the world's leading countries, by constantly changing and improving themselves. Well, there's something that hasn't changed all these years. It's our attitude.
Today, I was in my dad's car and we were waiting for the red light to turn green. I had nothing much to do, so i gazed around and looked at the people walking along the streets. There was this man, with his children, 2 little boys, and they were walking happily with packets of drinks in their mouth. Dad finished his drink and guess what he did? Threw it on the grass, and walked away. (how considerate!) They continue their journey home (i suppose, cause it was near lots of flats) without even bothering about the rubbish.
I was filled with disgust. Singaporeans are getting more reliant on foriegn workers nowadays, to clear their rubbish, to do manual labour, just because we think we are too 'developed' to be handling such jobs. But, Singapore is not going to survive even though we have the money to import more foreign workers to clean up our mess. It's our personal responsibility to ensure that the country is clean and nicely maintain for tourist, for hygiene and for our pride. The government placed a dustbin every 5m for a reason, not just for show. If we are not going to help keep our country, who is going to?
One more thing about that action that made me feel like fines should be implemented and no one in the country should complain because of that is how our future generation will be brought up. Take for example, the two boys with their father just now. What if everytime they went out as a family (which is good, cause families are the buliding blocks of the society), the father throws his rubbish without much thought all around. What meesage would he be sending to the children? That it's alright to throw your rubbish around? Is that what we want to inculcate in the future generation? I don't think so.
The government has spend lots of money in maintaining the country, educating people about the importance of social responsibility and most of all, moulding Singapore into a global city. But we can never be a global city if the attitudes of the people do not change. I love Singapore, and I'm sure every Singaporean do love Singapore somewhere in their hearts. Don't make the beautiful, clean and green Singapore disappear just because of that extra 5m you have to walk to throw your rubbish into the bin!
You entered my life in a casual way, and saw at a glance what I need.
They were others who passed me each day, but never one of them heeded.
That's why you are my friend.
FRIENDS FOREVER!
